There are now over 700 million users with on-line access
worldwide. 35.7% speak English. 12.9% are Chinese. 9.5% are
Japanese. German at 6.3%, UK 5%......59% are male. North America
has the highest household penetration of 62.3%. On-line usage by
interest is in descending order, 1) news and information, 2)
adult, 3) chat/discussion, and 4) games.
Internet Explorer 6 is the dominating browser, at 84% usage.
Netscape is second at 11% and other brands make up the difference
of 5%. Windows XP is the most popular operating system, and most
users are using a display with 800x600 pixels or more, with a
color depth of at least 65K colors.
The most current trend in monitors is that more and more
computers are using a screen size of 1024x768 pixels:
approximately 47%. Also, most computers use 24 or 32 bit hardware
to display 16,777,216 different colors; approximately 65%.
According to recent surveys of web surfers and professionals,
approximately 92% of all desktops have Java turned on.
The most popular URL extensions are .com, at 49.31%, .net at 7.20%,
.de at 6.64%, .org at 5.31% and the rest divided among .us, .mil,
.gov and others.
The number one Search Engine is now Google, with approximately 70%
of all searchers using this service. Google, www.google.com, now
lists 3,307,998,700 web pages within its huge index. Google was
also the number one recognized brand for 2003, according to
Advertising Age. The most trafficked search sites were, in
descending order, 1) yahoo.com, 2) msn.com, 3) goto.com, 4)
altavista.com, and 5) ask.com.
